Marie-Line Vaiani, Chair of the WFEO Committee on Energy and Secretary General of the French Energy Council, participated in COP29 as a member of the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) delegation.

These days of intense discussions and reflections were structured around the CEET plenary meeting, thematic working sessions, an industrial visit and participation in several key events including the intervention at the official side event organized by the WFEO, of which you can see more information in this page.

On this occasion, CEET published six new policy briefs, providing analyses and recommendations for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

These publications (available in this page) cover key topics such as:

  1. 1. Navigating the Coal Transition in Asia: Challenges, Lessons, and Pathways Forward

This brief addresses the technical, financial and social challenges related to the phase-out of coal in Asia, proposing strategies to reduce dependence on coal in the energy system.

  • 2. Comprehensive Catalogue on Transport Decarbonization

This catalogue offers decarbonization solutions for the most emitting transport sectors, such as aviation, road and maritime, with policy recommendations to accelerate the deployment of affordable solutions.

  • 3. Energy Performance Labels and Energy Savings Potential in Developing Countries

This brief demonstrates how energy performance standards for equipment could save up to 3,442 TWh of electricity per year by 2050 in the Global South.

  • 4. Phased and Managed Exit from Fossil Fuel Power Plants

This report describes how the retrofit and conversion of fossil fuel power plants can support a smooth and controlled energy transition.

  • 5. Overview of CO₂ Emission Reduction Strategies in the Cement Industry in China

This study explores strategies to reduce CO₂ emissions in the cement industry in China, which accounts for 3.5–4.0% of global emissions.

  • 6. Harnessing Low-Emission Energy from Waste

This note highlights how biogas production from waste in developing countries can contribute to sustainable development and the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

These publications reflect CEET’s commitment to providing technical and scientific solutions to global climate challenges, in line with the missions of the French Energy Council (promoting the sustainable supply and use of energy for the greater good of all) and the WFEO Energy Committee (being the reference in assessing current and future energy technologies for sustainable development, and actively participating in global sustainable energy programs).

What is CEET?

Under the aegis of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) is a high-level global body composed of engineers and energy system experts. It contributes to the United Nations Secretary-General’s goal of building a coalition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
