The latest recent episode of RVN Television's Morning Coffee Expert Series explores how professionals can build successful careers in the dynamic security industry, highlighting the important role of certifications in career advancement.

Dr. Roy Swift, executive director of Workcred, spoke with Erica Brown, director of certification at ASIS International, and host Joe Asumendi about some of the most in-demand security positions across sectors, and how certifications help validate relevant skills in the field.

ASIS International, an ANSI member, issues certifications, standards, and guidelines for security professionals. ASIS board certifications are developed and maintained through a rigorous process and accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

Brown explained the requirements for certifications from entry level to senior level security professionals, including high-level security practitioners who manage security teams.

The experts also reflected on how the security industry provides vast career opportunities for transitioning military and law enforcement personnel, and emphasized that professional certifications can serve as an important bridge between their prior service and civilian security roles in demand, including positions in schools and across hospitality.

Brown shared ASIS’s most recent salary study findings, which revealed that certified professionals earned about 20% more than non-certified professionals in the same space.

“Certification actually represents what your skill set (is), rather than an academic diploma on the wall, and I think that's what most employers are looking for,” noted Asumendi.

“When you look at any hiring manager, they’re looking to know can you do the job. We've seen in the news where people maybe falsify their resumés, and your certification [represents] that third party recognition of what you actually know and have been able to demonstrate,” Brown shared.
