On March 17, under the joint support of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the launch ceremony of the Africa Engineering Capacity Building Program was held in Nairobi. Nearly 200 representatives from governments, industries, academia, and research institutions across the global engineering community attended the event. Keynote speeches were delivered by He Junke, Executive Vice President and First Secretary of the Secretariat of CAST; Mustafa Shehu, President of WFEO; Joseph Mbugua, Principal Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport; and Gong Ke, former WFEO President and Head of the African Program Special Task Force.

Representatives from UNESCO, UNEP, UN-Habitat, the African Academy of Sciences, the Federation of African Engineering Organizations, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, the Engineers Board of Kenya, and engineering organizations from Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) extended congratulations on the program’s launch.

In his address, He Junke emphasized that amid the dual waves of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and green transformation, China and Africa must collaborate to advance engineering capacity, which serves as a critical guarantee for mutual modernization. CAST pledged long-term partnership and steadfast support for the program, expressing hope that it would cultivate engineering talent, address shared challenges, foster people-to-people connectivity, and contribute to building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era.

WFEO President Mustafa Shehu acknowledged CAST’s support, noting that Africa lags in achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted the program’s role as a key component of the UN Decade of Action for the SDGs, stressing its potential to bridge global technological divides, develop localized solutions, and galvanize multilateral cooperation.

During the ceremony, CAST and WFEO signed a Letter of Intent to formalize collaboration on the program, while the China Engineers Consortium inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Engineers Board of Kenya to deepen bilateral engineering partnerships.
